thomas cooks lamp

This lamp belonged to Thomas Cook who was Manager of the Mt Pleasant Mine in the 1890s.

In the hours and days after the devastating explosion at Mt Kembla in 1902, he went to the mine and used this lamp in his rescue operations, for which he was awarded a gold medal for bravery.

This manager’s lamp is in perfect condition and was generously donated to the Balgownie School Museum by Thomas Cook’s granddaughter Mrs Hilary Elliot in 2002, 100 years after the event.
