Since white settlement in 1788, migrants have come from all over the world to populate our island home. And the Illawarra is a diverse mix of the world’s people, who have come to enjoy its lifestyle and environment.
Those of Italian descent made up a good proporation of the local community. In 1966, the census revealed that the Italian population at this time exceeded 12% of the total regional population.
Many came for the work that the expanding coal, steel and industrial production industries offered. Australian Iron and Steel placed ads in Italy calling for workers in the 1950s and so they came, enticed by advertisements such as those above.
